Human Rights Watch, ACLU, Amnesty International Are Horrified By Elon Musk’s Purchase of Twitter

One positive effect of Elon Musk’s weeks-long effort to control Twitter and the subsequent debate about freedom of expression was that the Left’s most prominent individuals and institutions now openly hate freedom of speech. Their authoritarian nature and war against the fundamental principle of any free society, the freedom to express oneself without having to agree with the wealthy and powerful have been exposed. Barack and Hillary hate freedom of speech and want you to think it’s too dangerous for you. Now, three of the hypocritical and unctuous Leftist “human rights” establishment’s pillars, Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International (ACLU), and Amnesty International (AMN) have also spoken out against it.

Reuters took a solemn, almost funereal tone for major Leftist setbacks Monday and noted that Musk had described himself as a free speech absolutist and called freedom of expression the “bedrock” of a functioning democracy. This is why Leftists are furious that Musk has been able to control one of the most important means of mass communication in the age. They were complacent about their control over such outlets and as sure of the rightness and legitimacy of their power as any medieval king. But now, their hegemony is being severely challenged. It’s time for them to be called out by the reliably Leftist “defenders” of human rights to explain why this is so wrong.

Deborah Brown, who Reuters calls a “digital right researcher and advocate” at Human Rights Watch stated: “Regardless of who owns Twitter the company has human rights responsibilities that respect the rights of people around the globe who rely upon the platform. Small and large changes to the company’s policies, features, and algorithms can have devastating and sometimes disproportionate effects, including offline violence. Twitter must make sure that its most vulnerable users are safe. Freedom of expression is not a right.

It’s all about preventing violence. The Left insists that conservative speech is not only dangerous but also leads to violence. People will be hurt if Twitter allows freedom for speech. This argument would be stronger if Human Rights Watch had ever called for Antifa and Black Lives Matter violence or if Merrick Garland and the other Leftists that Biden and Merrick Garland insist are the greatest terror threat to the nation today, or if HRW ever expressed concern about Leftist violence against those who disagree with its agenda. HRW isn’t consistent. It has never expressed concern about the violence that could arise from Leftist speech. The warning that speech can cause violence is a lie. It ignores the fact even the most passionate free speech advocate doesn’t support allowing violence-related calls to be freely propagated. Evans is simply using a tried and true tool of the Left: The claim that speech must be limited because people will get hurt if it isn’t. This is still a shockingly incontestable assertion.

Anthony Romero (executive director of ACLU) stated that Musk was the problem. “While Elon Musk has an ACLU card-carrying membership and one of our most important supporters, there’s still a lot to be feared having so much power in his hands.” However, that individual has made it clear that he will allow people to speak even though they are being demonized and marginalized by the media and political elites. The ACLU is concerned that the cultural power that was almost exclusively in the Left’s hands for so long might not remain its exclusive property.

Michael Kleinman, Amnesty International USA’s director of technology and human right, sees trouble ahead. “The last thing that we need is a Twitter which willfully ignores violent and abusive speech towards users, especially those most disproportionately affected, such as women and non-binary people.” It is important to de-platformed those who advocate violence and illegal behavior. The self-appointed guardians of acceptable opinions have too often viewed any disagreement as hateful, violent, or abusive for too long. This must stop if we want a free society to continue. All people who are free must believe that Elon Musk is capable of making this happen. The ripples will go far beyond Twitter if he succeeds.
